The Right Way To Break Up
Author: Bill Smith
It is important for you to define the status of your relationship and make up your mind on either to put it on hold or break up completely. If you are breaking up completely, make sure you let your partner know that you are not just putting it on hold but that it’s a complete break up.
Here are some points on the right way to break up.
1. End the relationship when you feel it’s right. You don’t need to pretend that you still care about the other person when you are not. Once you have made up your mind, let your partner know about this and make sure you take your stand and don’t be conned by promises to change your mind about the decision you have made to break up.
2. Alert your partner before the break. You need to let your partner know how you feel about the relationship and your decision to break up. Don’t just break up abruptly without any sign or warning. Breaking up abruptly will cause a lot of damage and emotional trauma to your partner.
3. Don’t destroy your partner’s reputation. The fact that you are breaking up does not mean you should destroy your partner’s reputation. Don’t make negative statements about him or her. Think about the positive things you enjoyed in the relationship. Let people know you are breaking up for reasons well known to you rather than making negative comments about the other person. Talk about what the other person has contributed to your life positively and show your appreciation of his or her finer qualities.
4. Make sure your reasons for breaking up are genuine. Let your partner know why you are breaking up. This will let him/her learn from the mistakes. Make sure reasons are worth breaking up and let your partner know your stand about the situation.
5. Choose the right place and time to tell your partner about your decision to call it quits. Don’t tell your partner you are breaking up in front of others, in their office or when he/she is preparing for an important exam or interview. Make sure you don’t break up in public. This will leave a big sore in the heart of your partner if you do so. A woman should not break up behind closed doors if there is a possibility of being raped or beaten. Choose the right place and time to break up.
6. Don’t see the other person immediately after the break up. Let your emotions be balanced and make sure you get over the pains of the break up before seeing the other person again. When you eventually see each other, make your conversation brief and short. Don’t try to sound over friendly soon.
