How Breakups Build Character
Author: Don Gallow
You are in love one minute and the next thing you know you have your face in a pillow crying your eyes out. It is finally over and you feel as though you have lost the love of your life. You tell yourself that you will never get over it and that nothing will ever make you happy again.
If you say things like this you are no different than anyone else in the world. You have one thing right that your life is changed forever, but where you are wrong is that your life is not over and you still have a chance at happiness.
The end of a relationship is no different than failing a test in school. You are going to have plenty of opportunities down the road to get it right. You may have several that don’t go your way but there are more. We all think of relationships differently for some reason, probably because there are some serious emotions involved. Matters of the heart seem to impact us far more than any other disappointments.
You will have relationships again and you will have one that works. The thing to remember is that because of the breakup you will be much stronger. Ending a relationship is a new beginning to your life in which you have something to move forward with. You will know how you feel about things and you will have a more clear idea of what you want in a relationship.
When you are dating someone they are perfect at the time, and when it is over you can more clearly analyze what you wish they had been like. When the next guy or girl comes along you will be more likely to see the qualities of that person before you are even in a relationship, and this will enable you to make a more mature decision about who you date.
The strength you will build from the experience of breaking up with someone may seem non-existent, but soon you will realize the positive impact that it had on your character. While you are crying and eating a big bowl of ice cream, think of how much stronger you will be in the future having experienced a loss. If you lose a job you will be able to bounce back. It will take time but it teaches you that you have it inside to keep going. Life goes on with or without you, and the pain we go through throughout our lives teaches us to accept it and move on.
Stay strong and remember that the good and bad that happen to you now will shape who you are and what you do in the future. Breakups and pain are just temporary but the impact they have on your life will be with you forever. Think of it as a positive not a negative and you will be a stronger version of yourself later in life!
