Video: The Healing Power of Music Part 1
“I think people who can live their life in music are telling the world: ‘You can have my love, you can have my smiles. Forget the bad parts, you don’t need them. Just take the music, the goodness, because it’s the very best’, and it’s the part I give most willingly.” – George Harrison
Music’s Role in Improving Health
It’s pretty obvious that certain types of music can make us feel good. Research now tells us that music has a role in improving our health. Music can release the increase of endorphins; the body’s natural ‘feel good’ hormones. Music can lower hormones related to stress; effect physiological functions such as respiration, heart rate and blood pressure.
Music Therapy has its Roots in Ancient Times
A large amount of research has been done in music therapy by The American Music Therapy Association. It has shown over and over that music therapy has positive effects on people. The use of music to improve health was acknowledged by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Plato, Seneca and Cicero believed that music had profound effects on behavior. They believed it affected societies and the state should regulate the type of music as they believed some had potentially harmful effects. Today, many musicologists relate that music is a form of communication or language which directly accesses our emotions.
