You and your lover have been on the outs for some time. You two just can’t seem to see eye-to-eye anymore. You love them and you believe they love you but how in the world can the two of you solve your whole host of problems if you can’t even get through a discussion without arguing? It’s a horrible situation to be in. You want more than anything for the relationship to work but you can’t seem to find a way to make that happen. Have you considered taking time apart? Although it sounds like it’s the beginning of the end of your relationship, it isn’t. When a couple decides together to separate for a time it can actually pull them closer together than they ever imagined they could be.
There are several reasons why taking time apart is actually a positive thing for most relationships in trouble. If you two continue to stay together and work through your problems, you’re going to be greeted with the same disappointing results. Your relationship will become a breeding ground for disappointment and resentment and everything will inevitably fall apart. It will reach a point where that will be unavoidable.
If you take time apart you’ll be giving one another some much needed breathing room. You’ll both be able to focus more on yourselves and you won’t feel the constant pressure to address your relationship issues anymore. It’s important to have guidelines in place for your plan to be apart. Some couples decide not to talk at all for a couple of months while others feel it’s best to exchange emails once or twice a day.
You’ll find that your perspective on the relationship will change quickly once you start on your break. Reaching for the phone to tell your significant other something will seem normal until you realize that they’re no longer waiting to take your call. You’ll feel the constant ache of loneliness as each day passes and you’ll definitely wonder if they’re missing you just as much.
Chances are very good that your partner is feeling much the same things as you are. They are rethinking the relationship and whether all those small issues you two were quarreling about really mattered after all.
Once a week or two has passed, call them to see how they are. Let them know you miss them and allow them to hear that you sincerely still care deeply for them. This will be the way to bridge the distance and get you two back on track again. The difference this time will be that you will both truly appreciate and value what the other person brings to their life.
