How to Be Assertive

Assertiveness is a very important personality trait, especially in the field of leadership and management. Although this quality is more often needed in business that involves making the right decisions, the skill can also be very useful in many aspects of our life. For instance, family planning needs assertiveness, household budgeting also needs assertiveness. Basically, you need this quality in growing a family.

Why You Need to Be Assertive?

Assertiveness is having the ability to express yourself, stand up for what you believe in, and to uphold your rights. It is about showing to others who you are, your ideas, and your feelings.

If you are involved in a business, you really need to develop this skill. Without assertiveness, it is difficult to achieve success in a business. A business enterprise needs good leadership and management. Without it, your business will never be able to move forward.

For you to be able to show assertiveness, you need to be open, firm, and honest. As we all know, running a business is not an easy task. There will be many obstacles along the way. You need to be assertive when making important business decisions. You also need to be firm when dealing with other business challenges.

A businessman who lacks assertiveness will not be able to make important decisions that will propel their business forward. Without this quality, you come across as submissive and weak. This is not going to help you succeed in your business.

When you are not assertive enough, you could be wasting valuable resources because you cannot say no to every request. To set limits on your time and energy, you need to show assertiveness. Acting in your own best interest is also very important because although you are offering products and services to others, this is really about being able to profit and not run a business for charity. At the end of the day, it all boils down to how far you have reached in the road to success.

Here are the characteristics of an assertive person:

Someone who is not afraid to speak his mind. Assertive people is not arrogant but they always stand by what they believe. They are not afraid of expressing what in their mind clearly and to the point. Assertive people don’t waste time by beating around the bush. When they want to say something and they believe that it is the right thing to voice out, they will shoot it out.

Assertive people are not afraid to start a conversation to clarify something they think is not right. They are outgoing and friendly but firm on their stands.

Someone who can express himself well. He can verbally let others know his likes and dislikes and what his interests are, in a way that will effectively convey the message to others.

An assertive person is someone who is not afraid of disagreements. If they disagree with you, they will explain why they disagree. But assertive person also welcome disagreement. They don’t get angry if you disagree with them. They will hear what you have to say but they will also say what they think.

An assertive person shows persistence. If they failed, they don’t just give up. They will find better ways and they will try again.

An assertive person is very consistent in everything they do. They are consistent in their decisions, words and actions.

An assertive person will not be contented with mediocrity, he or she always strives for improvements in whatever they do.

So, if you want to become an assertive person, you will need to emulate the abovementioned qualities.
