What to Do When Life Sucks

Life SucksArticle #667

Author: Jack

It’s a fact. Sometimes life sucks! Things aren’t as they should be OR things aren’t as we would like them to be. If you feel that life sucks, well, allow me to validate your feelings. I hate it when folks respond with statements like: “oh, you shouldn’t feel that way” or “hey, life doesn’t suck, life is beautiful…” You want to hit such a person over the head with a 2 x 4!

Life is difficult and, at times, it truly does suck! Nobody ever said it would be easy, so deal with it. Accept the reality and move on. Here are a few suggestions of what to do when you feel that life isn’t gong too well:

1. Stop feeling sorry for yourself!

For as difficult as things may be, consider how fortunate you are and be mindful of what you do have. Stop the pity parties and move on realizing that others in this world are a lot worse off than you are.

2. Ground yourself!

Who are you? What are your gifts and qualities? What kinds of activities do you enjoy? Are you trying to please others? Are you trying to live up to other people’s expectations of you? Know who you are and be mindful of your needs and act accordingly. Try your best to focus on the positive.

3. Change your mindset!

When one feels that their life sucks, all sorts of little voices within lie to us about how ugly we are; what a loser we might be; how pathetic and stupid we are, etc… Talk back to those voices and strive to replace those negative thoughts with positive and more realistic ones. You are good! You are loved! You are alive for a reason! Consider what the purpose of your existence may be – you are definitely not here by accident.

4. Start a Gratitude Journal!

At the end of the day, jot down at least 5 things that made you happy or allowed you to appreciate the day. It can be small, simple stuff, like: a nice sunny day, a funny joke you heard, family or friends, a small task that was completed… Along with the things you are grateful for, write about your feelings. Journaling is a great way to clearly articulate for oneself what is actually happening and going on. It is a very spiritual and therapeutic exercise.

5. Smile, Laugh and Enjoy life!

Do fun things with others. Go to a movie, concert or a dinner outing with people who love you and care about you. Go out for a nice brisk walk and breathe in some good fresh air. Laughter is great medicine for the body and soul. Connect with others who can bring out the best in you.

6. Share your feelings!

Whatever it is you may be feeling, you need to talk it out. Share it with a close friend or relative; a pastor; a counselor; a life coach… It is extremely unhealthy to keep all of that negativity inside and in the dark. As one talks these things out, they are brought into the light and have less and less power over us. Sharing also allows us to get positive feedback from others.

7. Rely on your Higher Power!

Life is so much bigger than we are! We need to draw strength and power from a reality that is far greater than ourselves. Prayer, Reflection and Meditation are so key in dealing with the difficult and painful realities of life.

Life does suck sometimes but it can still be lived well and enjoyed. I like the motto: Pray hard! Play hard! Strive to Live, Love and Laugh a little bit every day!

8. Do not keep it within you. Shout out all your woes and life sucks problems to someone. I would prefer you shout them out at websites like www.whymylifesucks.us

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.”

Make today a GRATEFUL and GREAT-FUL day!
