How To Know Your Deeper Purpose In Life

Have you considered what your deeper purpose in life is? There seems to be a growing interest among many people as to know the answer to the question, “Why am I here?”

There has been a lot of talk about purpose in life, and what most people have been discussing has to do with their personality’s purpose rather than their soul’s purpose. Let me explain. Your personality’s purpose is about “doing” and your soul’s purpose is more about “being”. They are both equally important and each need to be expressed. Your personality’s purpose calls for you to use your gifts, talents and abilities in ways that contribute to others. So your personality’s purpose for example may be to help others through writing and speaking. Your soul’s purpose is all about the “quality” or “energy” that you bring to all the things you do. Using the above personality purpose example and adding a deeper level of purpose, your soul’s purpose for example could be to write and speak with compassion and empathy. Compassion and empathy are the soul qualities that are brought to the writing and speaking and the soul’s purpose is to embody and express those qualities in everything that is done. Here are some clues to begin discerning what your soul’s qualities are.

Think back over your life and see that at age five, 10, 20, 30, and today you basically related to things and people in your life the same way, with the same kind of energy. Reflect on this now. There is a certain energy and quality that has remained the same throughout your life. This quality is unique to you; you carry it with you 24/7. It is your core energy and your soul’s essence. This could be a quality of loveliness, delight, calmness, laughter, joy, etc. Look to see if you can find patterns in your life about how you related to situations and how you felt about situations. What are the qualities you find? Make a list.

What is your contribution by just being yourself? You have a gift that makes you incredibly unique and this gift is not about anything you do. It’s who you are. It’s your brilliance and magnificence. What do you bring to situations, people and life that makes a difference? Look deeply and you will find a certain quality, a particular energy that is unique to you.

Listen and pay attention to what other people comment on about you. When people acknowledge you for something you did, listen to the language they use to describe you. Listen for any key qualities and then make note of them. Go back and look at any past evaluations, acknowledgement cards, thank you cards or any other mementos you may have kept and see what people wrote about you. Is there a connection and pattern? Look for the same word used to describe you. Make note of this and then compare to your previous list from above. Again, are there any repetitive phrases or key words?

These are your essence qualities and will remain with you always. Your deepest purpose, your soul’s purpose is to express these qualities in everything you do. They are at the core of your being, and as you express them, you will experience a life with much more meaning, joy and aliveness.
