Is it possible to become an optimistArticle #717

Author: Marina Ratmansky

So, if it is possible to become an optimist, then what kind of ingredients do we need in order to become one?

You may ask me now, “OK, Marina, so are you telling me that if I have all of the above I will become optimistic? And if so, how do I get all of them in my life?”

This is one of my favorite things that I help my clients with. Together we go on the treasure hunt, searching for the nuggets of these ingredients, just as if they were gold. We all have them in us, but some of us have them tucked in so-so deep, that we are not even aware of them anymore. Many people are so overburdened with everyday problems, that they have forgotten what it’s like to have hope, to feel joy, to dream or even smile.

All of these things are inside of us. We were pre-programmed to have them in us.

~“I am an optimist. It does not seem too much use being anything else.”Winston Churchill

Optimists live longer and more productive lives. They accomplish a lot more in their lives, they have happier marriages, they bring up better children, and they are healthier and have a lot more friends. They find happiness in little things, even in the midst of a storm in their life. That’s the way to live.

Here are some practical steps you can start to practice.

  1. Stop complaining. Turn it around in to a positive statement. For example, if you think “This will never change,” turn it around into: “I believe that everything is going to work out for the best. Something good is going to come out of this situation.”
  2. Help someone else.It is far better to give than to receive. When you extend a helping hand to someone in need, it makes you feel useful, it gives you a sense of accomplishment and makes you look at life more optimistically.
  3. Have faith. It is a lot easier for people of faith to be optimistic about their future. Believing that the Higher Power is helping you in your trials gives you hope that is so needed in order to live a happier life.
  4. Smile.Smiling even if you don’t feel like it sends a message to your brain and creates a feeling of “happy”. In 1989, a psychologist named Robert Zajonc published one of the most significant studies on the emotional effect of producing a smile.
  5. Make an effort to find something good in something negative. You can choose to focus on something good instead of focusing only on the negative.
  6. Change your mind, change your world.Yes, we can choose what we think and how we perceive things. Learning to do that will take a little time, but the impact it will have on your life is tremendous.

It is my wish for all of us to learn how to become an optimist and look for the positive in our lives. The world would become a better place.
